UV-Resistant TPO Roofing System Delivering Long-Term Durability Under Ecuador’s Harsh Sun Conditions

Guayaguil, Ecuador is widely recognized for its extreme climatic conditions, characterized by intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation, prolonged sun exposure, and high ambient temperatures throughout most of the year. These environmental factors place exceptional demands on roofing systems.

Our client-the local roofing contractor was commissioned to carry out a roofing upgrade for a mid-rise commercial building that had experienced accelerated aging and premature degradation of its existing waterproofing system. The building owner required a solution that could withstand long-term UV exposure, reduce maintenance frequency, and remain within a controlled budget.

Challenges Faced by the Roofing Contractor, During the initial assessment, several critical issues were identified:

  • The existing roofing membrane showed significant surface chalking, brittleness, and micro-cracking, all caused by prolonged UV exposure.

  • Repeated thermal expansion and contraction had weakened seam integrity, increasing the risk of water ingress.

  • Previous repairs had only provided short-term relief and failed to address the root cause of material degradation.

The building owner demanded a roofing system with proven UV resistance and a predictable service life, without resorting to excessively high-cost imported brands.

The contractor therefore needed a roofing membrane that combined high UV stability, thermal durability, and long-term waterproof reliability, while still allowing efficient installation under tight project timelines.

Solution Provided by Shuangshi New Material

After technical consultation, Shuangshi New Material recommended a high-UV resistance TPO roofing membrane system, specifically formulated for enhanced UV resistance and thermal stability, making it particularly suitable for Ecuador’s harsh solar conditions.

Key technical features of the TPO solution included:

  • UV-stabilized polymer formulation, designed to resist long-term ultraviolet radiation without surface embrittlement.

  • High reflectivity white surface, significantly reducing heat absorption and slowing thermal aging.

  • Excellent resistance to ozone, heat, and environmental oxidation, ensuring consistent performance under continuous sun exposure.

Installation and Project Execution

The roofing system was installed using a hot-air welded single-ply TPO application method, ensuring that all seams, details, and penetrations formed a continuous waterproof layer.

The project covered a total roof area of approximately 8000 square meters, and the installation was completed on schedule without interruption to building operations, No signs of thermal aging were observed 12 months after acceptance.
